Joyce has designed a variety of non residential buildings including medical and dental offices, bed and breakfast lodges, hotels, retail stores, offices, and hardware stores. Because these buildings are usually located in prominent areas of a cities commercial district, there is an important impact to the city built environment that is distinctly different than a dwelling unit that is usually less prominent. In the design process, Joyce works to ensure that the new and remodeled commercial buildings serve their intended use, conserve energy, honor historic context, and make a contribution to the larger fabric of the city. Joyce always works on these buildings in partnership with either an engineer or her associate, William Zoller, a licensed architect. Stillman Buildings, Arcata Plaza, Arcata, CA
"I appreciate Joyce’s innovator ability in determining creative solution in difficult and constraining environments. She has an eye for making interiors livable and workable. Working with her on historic structures has increased her knowledge of these structures and she has become more understanding of this type of construction. Joyce and I have worked together on many projects over the years using our combined creativity to develop interesting, enduring and compatible buildings within our greater community. Those we have collaborated include: Stillman Buildings, Seeley Titlow dental office, Parsonage, Hell House, Fuerwerker Building, Hensel Hardware, Simpson House, Dillon House and several facades in Willits, California." - Alex Stillman Northcoast Inn Swimming Pool, Arcata, CA.
